Editorial

The Annual Gathering a few months ago seemed so far in the future and it is now coming up on us rapidly.  It will likely not be in Phoenix again for many years.  In my case, perhaps not again in my lifetime.  So it represents a unique opportunity to get in behind the lines.  You can always help out at any AG, but certainly not as easily as when it is in your own back yard.  So I encourage you to email or otherwise contact Carol at carolrants@home.com if there is something you would like to do or inquire as to what needs to be done.  Specifically you can email Gene at  geneous@bigfoot.com if being part of the security detail would be of interest to you.

In a more general vein, Mensa is an organization where you can innovate and start something.  It is almost a certainty that if you are interested in something, some other Mensans will also be.   All you have to do to start something is arrange a place to have a meeting and advertise it in the MAAM.  This can be as easy as simply including it on the Calendar, or writing an article to go along with the calendar entry and sending it to me.  Some activities that are part of the regular scene today had their beginnings many years ago.

The last point I want to mention is that while it is still a ways off, our elections for officers will be coming up this Spring.  Many people think that Mensa is run by an “inner group” that is hard to break into.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  A few months after my wife and I moved to Phoenix, I noted that the job of Newsletter Editor was open and simply stepped forward and volunteered.  Up to that point I was relatively unknown to Greater Phoenix Mensa even though I had been in Mensa for some years.  So whether you are new to Mensa or not, or new to Phoenix or not, the opportunity exists for you to step up and assume a position of responsibility on the board.
