Forum: Coming To America

by Mike Johnson

Mensa Forum, Friday, May 10th, 2002, 7:00 P.M., Pyle Adult Center

(Next to the Tempe Library on the SW corner of Rural & Southern)

There are at least 5 million refugees in the world who have nowhere to go and who cannot go home.  Some of these refugees manage to arrive at the borders of the United States and enter the country without authorization, often without any form of documentation as to their identity.  For many, the next stop is an INS detention center.  Unless there are grounds for legal relief, such persons will be deported.  One person who attempts to help newly arrived refugees is Richard Morrison, a lawyer and ordained clergyman of the Episcopal Church, who has a church-recognized ministry to those who qualify for political asylum.  Mr. Morrison will speak about the plight of the refugees who arrive here without benefit of any UN-sponsored resettlement and about his experiences in trying to help people seek a new life.

Richard Morrison is a partner in the Phoenix law firm of Salmon, Lewis & Weldon, P.L.C., where he practices in the area of natural resources law, dealing principally with water-related issues.  Richard is also an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church, where his ministry is principally focused on service to refugees seeking political asylum.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in Management from Northern Arizona University, a Master of Arts in Values from San Francisco Theological Seminary, and a law degree from the University of Houston.  He currently serves on 22 boards and commissions serving various professional, civic, and charitable interests.

A Post-Forum Debriefing will be held at the Uptown Brewery (behind Sweet Tomatoes).  Just head east on Southern for 1 mile and make a left when you see Sweet Tomatoes on the left.  If you get to the intersection of Southern and McClintock ¾ you’ve gone too far!  See you there!
