Sympathy from International Mensas |
Germany
Dear Mensa Friends in the US and the world,
It is such a horror to see and hear what happened in New York and Washington,
and it is far from anyone´s imagination. It is hard to find words for it at
all. The news deeply saddened not only my family and me, but every single person
I talked to, and it left us in utter shock. Our thoughts and prayers are with
the victims and their families.
Udo Schultz, Past International Chairman

On behalf of Mensa Belgium, I would like to offer my very deepest feelings
of concern to all who are involved in this awful tragedy. Terrorism is terrible
and should be eradicated. I hope that you may recover very soon. Please try
not to panic.
Peter Kravanja, Chairman Mensa Belgium
Norway
On behalf of the Norwegian members I send you all our biggest sympathy.
Acts like this are done by the biggest evil of all.
Stig Westerhus. Chairman Mensa Norway

Dear American colleagues
Just to add my sense of outrage at the events in NY today. I hope that you and
yours are safe. With deep sympathy

My Dear American friends,
I am shocked about the events recently happening in the States. First, I thought
it was some kind of an Internet joke.. - but it seems it is not.
I hope all your friends, relatives and folks - and Mensans - are OK, and
terrorism can be stopped immediately.
All out deepest concerns about Mensa and its internal life seems to be so
minute at once...
Please let me express my greatest misericord!
I also hope for a nice meeting in Budapest.
Bibiana, Mensa Hungary
Canada
I want to add my voice to those who have already written.
As you may know, Toronto is a very short flight away from NYC. All international
flights scheduled to land in the U.S. since this morning have been diverted
to Canadian airports and, other than those flights, no other commercial airliners
are flying in Canada today either. When something huge happens in the United
States, we in Canada feel as though it has happened to us too, since the US
is such a close friend and neighbor. We share the longest undefended border
in the world.
From the time I arrived at the office around 9 ET today, until I left a 12:30
(there was no point in staying longer - no work was being done and
many of us headed out), I remained glued to the television sets, tuned to CNN.
Many, many tears were shed in our building today. Some were tears of relief.
The son of one of my co-workers works in the World Trade Centre.
We all cried when he was finally able to get through to her to tell her he
had slept in and was nowhere near the building when catastrophe struck. My
prayers and thoughts are with all those families who will not receive such good
news.
Toronto police closed the CN Tower (the world’s tallest free-standing structure)
and many high rise down-town office buildings were eventually
closed, including First Canadian Place, 72 stories, where the Toronto Stock
Exchange is located (and where my oldest son and his wife both work). These
were precautionary measures and, as I said, we feel our family was attacked
and little work was being done. In addition to that, there are rumors of one
hi-jacked plane which has shown up in Whitehorse, NWT (Canada’s far north).
Again, my love, my prayers and my strongest hope that all your loved ones are
well go out to my American friends. And may God walk with us all during these
terrible times.

South Africa
I have been out most of today, and I have never known anything like it. It seems
like the whole of South Africa is stunned, glued to the various news
services to try to understand and explain why.
Judging by those news broadcasts and all the emails, everybody everywhere
is stunned.
You are not alone; we are all caring and wishing we could do more.
God bless.
Sincerely, Tim Knights
