Shoestring Gourmet: These Are a Few of My Favorite Things |
For September’s Gourmet, we prepared dishes inspired by the menu of the Restaurant & Brasserie Luden, in Amsterdam.. For the occasion, our host Syd Golston prepared a table whose sparkling silverware and elegant settings was fitting homage to the café we were using as our theme. Ursula Gore started us off with her pureed onion, leek, carrot, and kohlrabi soup with a sprinkle of smoked turkey. After a serving of crisp rolls by Glenn Case – and don’t worry, I would praise these even if he were not the editor - Marilyn McDonald and Jim Morgan introduced our entrees: his veal fricassee with puff pastry and shiitake mushrooms. The evening’s wines began with Jim’s Pedroncelli Australian rose., after which came a sampling of Beringer cabernet Syd Golston’s sizzling entrée was pork filet with chicory and pan-fried potatoes and agaric mushrooms. Linda and Gerry Brazelton followed with shrimp bisque. .. Before dessert, Joanne Kerrigan served champagne topped with a strawberry. For dessert we enjoyed Janet McDonald’s apple mini-strudels with whipped cream.
This month, each of us will do his or her best-loved recipes of all. Are you an ultimate barbecue steakmeister? Do you make the world’s greatest blueberry pie? Let’s have your favorite creation, any genre. We will be getting together at 6 p. m. on Saturday, October 14 right here at the home of Ursula and Alan Gore. Be sure to call Ursula at 602-863-9648 by Thursday, 10/12 to coordinate dishes.
