Possessing a high I.Q. does not guarantee that a person is capable of thinking creatively. Thinking outside the box in a non-linear fashion is a skill that many smart people do not have in abundance. And many people, of more or less average intelligence, may be able to come up with creative ideas and unique solutions to problems. But, on the other hand, perhaps the best definition of a genius (In the best sense of the word) is a person with a very high I.Q. who is able to think in a very creative manner to produce unique, and important, works of science and art. There are not enough" Einstein and Leanardo Da Vinci" in this world.
Creativity is hard to define. For example, who is more creative -- the artist who uses urine and feces as a new art medium or the engineer who invents a faster computer chip? Who would get the most attention in the media for demonstrating creativity? Who should? And unfortunately, creativity is a buzzword that seems to have been glommed on to be a whole host of wacky guru\rquote s, consultants, and teachers to justify their professional careers.
At its heart, creativity probably has much to do with being able to see things in a new light, and to be able to make new connections and associations not previously understood. But is this a skill that can be learned or developed with practice? How can creativity be used to in our own personal and professional lives to make us happier and more successful human beings? These types of questions will be explored in our June Forum. Our speaker will be Douglas Kelley, Ph.D. an Assistant Professor at ASU. This should prove to be a thought provoking evening. We hope to see you there!
