Roll-M: The Crew |
The Crew (starring Richard Dreyfess, Burt Reynolds, Dan Hedaya, Seymour Cassel; written by Barry Fanaro; directed Michael Dinner; rated PG-13.)
Think of The Crew as The Over the Hill Mob. Four two-bit hoods are living out their retirement years in fashionable Miami Beach, rocking on their porch, watching the babes go by. Meanwhile, yuppies circle their run-down hotel like vultures, waiting for the fogies to croak so they can move into this desirable area. So the quartet dream up a scheme to shoot an already-dead corpse and make it look like a mob hit, then plant the body in the hotel lobby to ward off resident wannabes. Trouble is, the body they choose from the morgue is that of a drug kingpin whose son is most displeased with dad’s "murder."
This comedy is not a film for everyone, and it certainly doesn’t skew to the 18-25 year-olds that most producers crave. But there are some juicy moments, lots of good humor, and fine performances from these aging actors. The only drawback is that the cast members are playing older than their true ages and it’s a bit of a stretch to think of these actors as senior citizens (also a bit scary!).
