Candidate: LocSec (President)

by Jerry Corbin

Mel Anderson deserves a lot of credit for the time, enthusiasm, and creativity he has put into the LocSec position over the past year. He will be a tough act to follow. Some of the creative new GPM programs instigated over the past year such as EMAIL Mensa Reminders, Area Coordinators, and Young Ms have worked better than others so far. But GPM has learned much from the trying, and I applaud and support the efforts to get more new people involved in Mensa at the local level. I plan to continue to make this an important goal for GPM in the coming year.

As Assistant LocSec over the past two years, I tried to upgrade the Monthly Forums into an event that GPM members would be proud and happy to support. I focused on lining up interesting and thought provoking speakers, attempted to make the Forum descriptions printed in the MAAM interesting and informative, and I found a "permanent" home for our Forums at the Pyle Center. I believe that it is important that Mensa offers more unique experiences and benefits, like the Forum, which are not available from other social organizations. I will work with the Executive Committee to focus on this important goal in the coming year.

Also I promise to try to perform a task that seems to be particularly difficult for many of us Mensans. With the help of the other members of the Executive Committee, I will shut my mouth, open my ears, and will attempt to actually listen to what the GPM members are saying they want and need from GPM. After all, if GPM is not fulfilling the reasonable wants and needs of our membership, then GPM will cease to be the vital and healthy organization that we want it to be.

Finally, hosting a Mensa Annual Gathering is a huge undertaking. Although we are fortunate to have a strong AG chair in Carol Young, it is imperative that the Executive Committee and GPM membership provide her AG Committee all the support it needs and deserves. After all, July 2002 is not so far away.

Vote for me. I am better than nothing!
