Young At Heart

By Carol Young

Happy 1999! We begin our journey through the last year of the nineteen hundreds. I was tempted to write a full paragraph on the coming "start of the new millennium" just to see if anyone would comment on the fact that it really starts in 2001. To those who argue vehemently about when the millennium starts, I would only say that you are correct. But you’re gonna be missing one hell of a party about 363 days from now.

Anyway, it IS the start of a new year and that’s always exciting, especially when the Annual Gathering is once again in driving distance. A new year is like a sheet of clean paper and we can create whatever memories we want on it. Mensa is helping to start it off with some wonderful activities:

DON’T FORGET THAT RG!!

We’re about 2 weeks and counting before Greater Phoenix Mensa hosts its 20th annual Regional Gathering. If you are new to the organization, this is the weekend for you. There will be lots of activities design to titillate your mind, stimulate your appetite and help you become comfortable with the group. You won’t be disappointed and it’s not to late to sign up.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

If you are interested in becoming more involved in Greater Phoenix Mensa, but feel you don’t have the background, knowledge, etc. to do the job correctly and you don’t want to make it up as you go along (as many of us do! ), you can attend Mensa’s Leadership Development Workshop being held at the end of February in San Bernardino. Here you’ll have the opportunity to exchange ideas with leaders from other groups. Workshops will be held on such topics as: Administration, Editing the Newsletter, Recruitment of New Members, Proctors and Testing Sessions, organizing an RG and Retention. If you think you’d like to attend, please contact me at 243-0480 and I’ll give you the details.

CULTURE QUEST IS COMING

Mensa’s annual trivia contest is just a few months away and it’s not too soon to organize a team. Just get a team of 5 Mensa members together and prepare to have fun for 90 minutes trying to answer questions from many different areas. The Phoenix team placed 3rd in the country last year, our highest ranking ever. This year, we would love to have several different teams working in different rooms of the same house and then having a pot-luck get together to share answers and groan or hooray each other when the quest is over. National is adding – for the first time – a young adult division, so Mensans aged 12 - 18 can participate for prizes. Start getting your teams assembled. Details for registering will appear in the next few months.

I hope you’ve all made the resolution to attend some Mensa functions and meet the other people who joined this organization. There is much the organization can offer you for your $45 beyond the MAAM and the Bulletin. Take the time this year to find out just how much.
