Shoestring Gourmet: Dinner at the Punnery Range |
Just before Valentine’s Day, we met at Jim Morgan’s home to partake of Brazilian cuisine. Syd Golston led off with pão de queijo, a sensually chewy cheese bread appetizer. Host Jim Morgan and Marilyn McDonald presented a feijoada completa, a full main course with black beans, pork ribs, smoked tongue, chorizo, and linguisa, a Portuguese dark smoked sausage. Jane Khatiblou provided the tangy pimento - lemon sauce to go with this course, molho de pimenta e limão. Ray Pisar and Diana Toone prepared caruru com cointro, okra with cilantro. A pair of new Mensans, Yvonne and Gary Solbrekken, brought arroz Brasileiro, Brazilian rice, accompanied by Brazilian coffee. From Ursula Gore we got arroz de bacalhau, rice with salt cod, and the baby back ribs to accompany the feijoada. Joice and Chuck Braden followed with farofa (cassava). Marilyn McDonald finished up with an entirely new way to do avocados: as a chilled dessert with whipped cream, crème de abacate. accompanied by Syd’s chocolate-covered espresso beans. A selection of Brazilian wines completed the evening.
On Saturday, March 13, at 6 pm. we meet at the home of Ursula and Alan Gore for – drumroll, please – food of the stars. Now aside from Paul Newman and his salad dressing, celebrities are reluctant to let on that they even eat at all, so for this one we’re going to have to use our imagination. Can you envision Sharon Stone soup? Chili Art Carney?
