RVC Report: Regional Ramblings |
The big story this month comes from Los Angeles. Actually, it would have been the big story last month but I ran out of space after listing all the newsletter award nominations and the Regional Advisors.
So, what is this big story? Greater Los Angeles Area Mensa has published 400 issues of Lament. Lament was the first Local Group newsletter. Prior to that there was only the National publication which listed all activities for the whole country. Can you imagine what the Bulletin would be like if they did that today.
When choosing a name for the newsletter they selected LAMEN for Los Angeles Mensa but wanted to complete a word. They had other suggestions, but finally chose Lament. The reason they chose such an unhappy title was because National would not give them any financial support.
The Lament has had 31 Editors and some issues were put together by a committee. GLAAM has tried to contact all the past Editors to invite them to a celebration dinner on June 12. Let us have a big round of applause for Greater Los Angeles Area Mensa and all who have edited Lament.
San Diego is also in the news. After a WOW of a Regional Gathering over Memorial Day weekend they announce A Way With Words. Richard Lederer has a weekly radio program. The program will be broadcast every Sunday at 5:00 pm on KPBS FM 89.5. If you can get this station you are encouraged to listen and even call in with questions or comments about language.
About the time you read this, I and many of you will be in Cincinnati at the Mensa Annual Gathering. Mensa Annual Gatherings are a lot of fun but they also have their business side. Some will be waiting to hear the results of the Newsletter Awards and CultureQuest. Some will have meetings of or with the NomComm. There is also the Annual Business Meeting and the AMC Meeting.
There are a lot of motions on the agenda for the AMC meeting, some of them could have far reaching effects on American Mensa. I believe that this will be the most important AMC meeting in some time. If you will be at the AG, I encourage you to attend the AMC Meeting and the Annual Business Meeting.
Next month I will report on the Annual Gathering and will let you know who received awards and what happened at the business meetings.
Have you registered yet for Orange County MensaÕs FlaMingo Fling? This RG is to be held July 24-26. I am sure you have received details in this newsletter or look at the Gatherings pages in the Bulletin.
