Shoestring Gourmet: Ultimate Italian

By Alan Gore

In January, we atoned for the calorie-intensive holiday season with a theme of light fare. Joice and Chuck Braden (I’m so glad to have Joice back to help me record the dishes!) prepared carrot and pineapple muffins with cream cheese topping, and herbal tea. Esther Shaw, a newcomer to our group this month, brought wine and French bread. Jane Khatiblou prepared spinach pasta salad, while Pat Hull favored us with a palate-clearing sparkling gelatin. Jim Morgan and Marilyn McDonald cooked goi cuon, a Vietnamese salad roll. Diana Toone and Ray Pisar cooperated to bring us Asian tamarind soup. Ursula Gore labored over baked sole stuffed with vegetables, with cream cheese topping. George Miles, who is also relatively new to the group, provided that essential low-cal staple, rice. Ken Brown grilled Hong Kong style steak. Robert and Rita Lehnert prepared pork apple stir fry and turmeric sauce. For a fitting end to the evening, Kebba Buckley baked "mystery fruit" bars.

Our February Gourmet happens to fall on Saturday, February 14, at 6 p. m. Our host this time is the sultry and multitalented Syd Golston, whose Tempe location is central for all of us. We take this month’s theme from a recent Canadian movie, Big Night. This independent film, set in 50’s New Jersey, takes place in the restaurant of Primo and Secondo, brothers and recent immigrants from Italy. One crucial scene is a big Italian feast, involving both plain and fancy dishes. This time, we are going to prepare dishes from the film. Call Syd at 345-2161, e-mail her at SGOLSTON@MSD38.K12.AZ.US, or call Jim Morgan at 831-2170 to get recipes from the movie you can try out.

Syd can take a maximum of only sixteen people, so please contact her no later than Thursday, Feb. 12 to reserve and get directions. The earlier you call, the larger your choice of recipes will be.
