Young at Heart

By Carol Young, LocSec

Whew! Whirlwind happenings in my life as I began full-time work for the first time in years. I’ve been either self-employed or working part-time for a while. But in a fit of middle-aged boredom, I faxed in a resume to an interesting-sounding job at an area out-patient behavioral health center and three weeks later I started my first day of work. So far, so good. I made the right decision for me at this point in time. It could mean that I don’t return calls or get back to you as quickly as possible, but I suspect I’ll click into a routine fairly soon.

Meanwhile, there’s some important news to report on or remind you of this month:

First, October 31 is the deadline for registering for Phoenix Phiesta 19 at the rock bottom prices. We’ve had a few smart people take advantage of the low rate. Be one of them and send in your registration form today. The envelope MUST BE postmarked by October 31 in order to take advantage of this rate, so send it in ASAP before you forget. You’ll find the registration form at the beginning of this month’s Calendar. There was also one in last month’s MAAM if you don’t want to tear it out of this month’s issue.

We’ve gotten a small room at the Days Inn for our Thanksgiving Salon, which will be held from about 1PM to about 4PM on Thanksgiving Day. Maynard has agreed to be our coordinator, so look for information in next month’s MAAM about signing up for side dishes, desserts, etc. If you are interested in cooking a turkey or a ham (you will be reimbursed by the ExCom) please let me know. We’ll need about 3 people to cook turkeys and 1 to cook a ham. We are basing our plans on an anticipated participation of about 50 people. If you are planning on attending, please please please call me at 243-0480 and let me know so we can adjust food or the room upwards, if necessary.

Over the past few months, I’ve been working – via e-mail – on the Retention Committee that American Mensa Ltd. formed to review, discuss and make recommendations on how to keep Mensans joining year after year rather than allow their memberships to lapse. What do you think? Send me some of your suggestions. I don’t want to hear what Mensa is doing wrong and/or what it should stop doing. I want to hear what it should do more of to keep and retain members. You know how to reach me and I’m interested in hearing what you think on this topic.

That’s it for this month.
