Partying

by Leigh Butler

I surely do wish that GPM had an historian, because our February Salon will be at the home of a man I would like to refer to as the "Darling of GPM" and his interesting story deserves a permanent home. We all met him in 1987 when several of us were burning up the phone wires to encourage other members to attend the RG. We were in danger of losing our Hospitality Suite perk because there were not enough reservations to compensate. One of the calls we made was to Nancy Bayfield in Cave Creek, but Nancy never got that message. Our angels "out there" knew that Pete Costantino and GPM were a match, so despite the fact that his phone number was nothing like Nancy’s, we got Pete. His voice mail response was so delightful that we have never let go of him since. We just knew that he would fit in and he has, in spades. It is American Mensa’s loss, however, that their testing guidelines are so rigid. The last time his cheering section got together and bought another qualifying exam for him to become one of us in deed, he came so close that A.M. sent him a nice letter encouraging him to try again. I’m sure he will.

Tyger Gilbert was scheduled to have that Salon on the 15th, but at the last minute had to change it to the first, so, Pete to the rescue. What coud be more appropriate than a Valentine’s Day party at the home of the man whom everyone loves? His chosen theme is "Come as you Love", and he is a licensed minister in a non-denominational church — does anybody want to get married at the Salon? (Of course, I’ll be the Official Mensa Hostess.)

To get there: take the Superstition Freeway (US 60) to the Sosseman exit, drive north 1-1/2 miles to Main Street. Turn right (east) for another 1/2 mile to 83rd Place. The Castle Boutique is right there on the corner. Turn right (south) to the fourth house on the left. It has a 6 ft. cyclone fence around it. If we run out of parking space on the street, there is a dirt lot across the street for overflow.

Please bring foods that you enjoy eating to the participatory buffet. We have been enjoying some really pleasurable repasts during the past few months.

Tyger’s Soiree on Feb. 1 is sure to be a wonderful change of pace for us. Fitness West is a fine facility and will give us a fantastic opportunity to try out all those thousands of dollars worth of their equipment while socializing among ourselves. Don’t miss it! Exercise clothes are optional, but if you want to use the pool or hot tub, suits are a must.

The address is 1505 E. Bethany Home Road, the southeast corner of Bethany Home and 16th St. There is ample parking on both sides of the building. We will have a jug of purified water for attendees, but the management will not allow us to bring in any other beverages or food. They do have a health drink bar, however, so we will not be deprived.

The Soiree on the first of March is not yet taken. Call me if you would like us to visit you on that or any other date for a Soiree or Salon. My number is 264-9321.
