Genetic Engineering

by Bruce Stiles

The recent announcements regarding advancements in genetic cloning have increased interest in genetic engineering. How is cloning done? How is gene splicing done? What is this about turning genes "on" and "off?" What are the genuine current possibilities, and what is hype? What might be possible in the future, and what could never be done? What are some of the benefits that we might get from genetic engineering? A cure for cancer? A 200-year lifespan? Maintenance-free lawns? What are the ethical problems that will have to be resolved? Come to the June Forum and find out.

Dr. Joseph Graves is Associate Professor of Evolutionary Biology at Arizona State University West and is a member of the Genetics Society of America. He is well-qualified to enlighten us on the fascinating topic of genetic engineering. Please join us for what is sure to be an interesting and informative program.

The subject for the July Forum will be Superconductivity.
